Chicago \u2014World renowned sexologist<\/a>, best-selling author of\u00a0The Bonobo Way<\/em><\/a>, and host of the\u00a0Dr. Susan Block Show<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0Dr. Susan Block<\/a>, a.k.a. Dr. Suzy, recently appeared on episode 5 of\u00a0VICE TV\u2019s\u00a0Sex Before the Internet<\/em>\u00a0series, produced by former ABC News President James Goldstone.\u00a0In the episode titled \u201cSex on TV,\u201d which first aired on Feb. 7, 2023,\u00a0Dr. Suzy discusses both her experiences and the impact of\u00a0HBO<\/a>\u2019s groundbreaking cult favorite reality show,\u00a0Real Sex<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/strong>HBO\u00a0was the place to go for adult entertainment that was as smart as it was sexy in those spicy, sex-exploratory years surrounding the turn of the 21st century,\u201d explains Dr. Suzy. \u201cIn many ways, HBO\u2019s\u00a0Real Sex<\/em>\u00a0was unprecedented in television history and unsurpassed ever since. It also happened to be open-minded, informative, educational, empathetic, relatively nonjudgmental, funny and a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

The feeling was mutual. HBO called Dr. Suzy “radio’s sexiest, funniest, most outrageous sex therapist\u2026 if conversation is a sex act, then this Yale graduate has a very talented tongue.”<\/p>\n

Vice\u2019s \u201cSex on TV\u201d opens with footage of Dr. Suzy\u2019s signature \u201cBrothers and Sisters, Lovers and Sinners\u2026\u201d which leads into her monologue on\u00a0ethical hedonism<\/a>\u00a0that also kicks off\u00a0Real Sex 25.\u00a0<\/em>The moment is followed by a present-day interview with Dr. Suzy, where she states that\u00a0Real Sex<\/em>\u00a0was \u201ca sexual revolution\u2014for television.\u201d<\/p>\n

After making cameo appearances on a few of the very first\u00a0Real Sex<\/em>\u00a0shows, Dr. Suzy was first featured on\u00a0Real Sex 11<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in 1995, then again on\u00a0Real Sex 25<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in 1999. In between her\u00a0Real Sex<\/em>\u00a0segments, HBO launched two half-hour spin-offs hosted by Dr. Suzy,\u00a0Radio Sex TV<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(<\/em>1997) and\u00a0Radio Sex TV 2: Off the Dial<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(1998), all about \u201cSex. Fun. Wisdom.\u201d Both were #1-rated Nielsen specials.<\/p>\n

\u201cSex on TV\u201d also shows a\u00a0Real Sex 11\u00a0<\/em>clip of Dr. Suzy broadcasting her live syndicated radio show from bed 28 years ago, juxtaposed with her present-day studio as she broadcasts alongside her husband of over\u00a030 years<\/a>\u00a0(also appearing in\u00a0Radio Sex TV<\/em>\u00a0and her\u00a0Real Sex<\/em>\u00a0segments),\u00a0Max Lobkowicz<\/a>,\u00a0on\u00a0<\/em>F.D.R. Radio<\/em><\/a>, where she still helps callers with their love lives, still educating, exploring and sharing \u201csex\u2026 fun\u2026 wisdom.\u201d<\/p>\n

The episode also includes interviews with former head of HBO Documentary Films and\u00a0Real Sex<\/em>\u00a0executive producer Sheila Nevins,\u00a0former HBO President Michael Fuchs, Real Sex<\/em>\u00a0lead producer Patti Kaplan, producer\/director Deb Wasser, and other members of the female-led\u00a0Real Sex<\/em>\u00a0production team, along with appearances by sex educator Tristan Taormino (another\u00a0Real Sex<\/em>\u00a0featured guest), as well as comedians Nikki Glaser, Lunell, Joanna Briley, Zach Noe Towers, and adult performer\u00a0Silvia Saige<\/a>, all of whom say they *grew up on*\u00a0Real Sex<\/em>\u00a0when it aired on HBO, and a few of whom would love to *bring it back* in some form.<\/p>\n

In her Vice interview, Dr. Suzy talks about how\u00a0Real Sex<\/em>\u00a0greatly expanded her audience, enabling her to reach people all over the world, as it helped so many others to share their sexual experience, insight and joy via this unique and remarkable TV show.<\/p>\n
