Sex worker rights activist and advocate Kate D\u2019Adamo writes that \u201cwith the world\u2019s first global pandemic in over ten years, sex workers are responding to a situation already cloaked in health fears, hysteria, insufficient institutional response\u2026 for people who operate in a non-essential services market, which often includes intimate physical contact, the impact has been broad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn efforts to limit physical spread of the virus, many companies, including Twitter, Google and Facebook (as well as the federal government), have all restricted employee travel in various ways. For areas of the adult entertainment industry, who are often reliant on conferences and travelers, these cancellations are really starting to add up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But for this inadequately serviced industry that still operates in the shadows of big business, quarantine isn\u2019t an option when the bills have to be paid. \u201cMy bottom line has taken the hit too, you just won\u2019t see it in Forbes,\u201d notes one New York-based provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Above all, the workers\u2019 health remains their top priority. \u201cI\u2019m forgiving all last-minute cancellations\u2026 I don\u2019t want to get sick, so I\u2019ll say, \u2018[if you\u2019re not feeling well] please stay home,\u2019\u201d says Seattle-based provider Solana Sparks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community outreach programs such as HIPS in Washington, DC \u201chave already been feeling the challenges, especially in how rapidly things are changing,\u201d writes D\u2019Adamo. HIPS\u2019 Alexandra Bradley adds that “in terms of outreach, we’re operating on an ‘everything is changing every couple of hours’ basis\u2026 there’s no real barrier, so everybody’s trying to do their very best for everybody to stay safe.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u2019Adamo concluded that \u201cin the end, the two most resilient things are always going to be sex workers and the desire for sex, especially in times of crisis,\u201d referring to Sparks\u2019 hopeful observation:
\u201cAs things get stressed out, we can be a lot of peoples\u2019 outlets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
